CAN bus: what is it?

CAN-bus - a breakthrough in Auto Electricity.

In modern cars, electronics is becoming increasingly important, ensuring the operation of various systems and devices. Special data buses are used to exchange data between devices and components in the vehicle. One of the most common and important buses in auto electrics is the CAN bus (Controller Area Network), which provides a reliable and efficient exchange of information between car devices. In this article, we will look at the history of the CAN bus and its application in auto electrics.

The CAN bus was developed in the early 1980s by the German company Robert Bosch GmbH. The challenge facing the engineers was to create a reliable and efficient communication system between the various electronics in the vehicle. Previously used methods such as analog wires and separate digital lines for each device proved to be inefficient and costly.

After extensive research and development, in 1986 Bosch introduced a new technology, the CAN bus. It was originally used in the automotive industry, but soon became widespread in other areas such as industry, railways, medical technology and other areas where reliable communication between devices is required.

The basis of the CAN bus is an asynchronous and multi-user data transfer protocol. Each device on the bus has a unique ID, and when it wants to send data, it sends a message containing its ID and the information that needs to be sent.

A special feature of the CAN bus is the high reliability of data transmission. It has the ability to automatically detect collisions, which avoids data loss when multiple messages are sent by different devices at the same time. The CAN bus also has good resistance to interference and noise, making it an ideal choice for the automotive industry.

By installing a mileage blocker, we can analyze what data is transmitted over the CAN bus and determine their intended purpose and the need for storage in this module.

The CAN bus has become the standard for communication between various electronics nodes in modern vehicles. It is used to communicate between the engine and engine management systems, transmission, anti-lock braking system (ABS), stabilization system (ESP), airbags, climate control, audio and video systems, and many other components and devices.

Through the use of the CAN bus, the number of wires and the weight of the electrical wiring in the car has been greatly reduced, which reduces assembly complexity, improves reliability and reduces production costs. It also makes it easier to introduce new technologies and systems into cars, as their integration with existing electronics becomes easier.

The CAN bus is a key element in modern vehicles, providing efficient data exchange between various devices and systems. Its high reliability, immunity to interference and ease of integration have made it a popular standard in auto electrics. Thanks to the CAN bus, cars have become safer, greener and more comfortable for drivers and passengers.
